Before being named Ilha do Francês, the islet was known as Ilha de São Francisco de Paula, in honor of Canasvieiras' patron saint.

However, the popular story that named the island as we know it today is much more intriguing: the island was said to have been inhabited by a French citizen. The most widespread legend suggests that this was a war veteran who had fought in Napoleon Bonaparte's Grand Armée and, after the defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, sought refuge and peace in the paradise of Floripa. He settled in the region, living as a fisherman.

Like every magical island, Ilha do Francês is also surrounded by legends of pirates and hidden treasures. An alternative story tells that the name would be a reference to a French vessel that sank nearby.

It is said that the ship's crew were victims of an epidemic and were buried there, which is said to have given rise to the nickname "do Francês" (of the Frenchman).
