The Mullet Season in Floripa: Culture, Respect, and the Winter Sea

They say there are three saltwaters that heal a human being: sweat, tears, and the sea. This season, Adventure in Floripa had all of them.

We sweated. A lot. Both in and out of the water, prepping every piece of equipment so you could focus solely on connecting with nature and yourself. We had tears... but all of joy and achievement. And plenty of sea! The crossing to Ilha do Francês became our favorite route. And it’s no coincidence. The sea there... well, those who went know what I’m talking about.

Thank you to the nearly three hundred adventurers who trusted our work, sharing paddles, smiles, and breakthroughs. From four-year-olds to the inspiring energy of those in their 70s, we showed that with care, knowledge, and respect, the sea is for everyone.

Ilha do Francês became a "yard" for people from every corner of the planet. We welcomed the world in Canasvieiras and showed why Florianópolis is magical.

And we didn’t stay only in the water; we explored trails too, reaching the Naufragados Lighthouse.

Yes, the high season is over. But we... we keep in the water. Because for those who live by from the sea, the season never ends.

It’s just the beginning; there is much more to come.

After paddling, exploring, and living the experience… what remains is lightness, connection, and stories to tell.

Today, May 1st, Florianópolis wakes up with a different glow. The nets are stretched on the sand, and the fishermen’s eyes turn to the horizon. The Safra da Tainha (Mullet Season) begins—a tradition that is the true heritage of our Island and dictates the pace of local life for the coming months.

At Adventure in Floripa, we believe the sea is a space for sharing. That’s why we’ve prepared this guide so you can enjoy the beauty of this season with awareness, safety, and respect for the fishing community.

1. The Silence that Feeds Tradition

Artisanal mullet fishing depends on observation and silence. Any noise or unusual movement can scatter the schools before they are netted. That’s why, from May to July, several open-sea beaches have restrictions for boats and water sports.

Respecting red flags and navigation limits is a commitment we make as guides, instructors, and mariners. Before launching a kayak, our team monitors permitted areas to ensure our adventure doesn't interfere with the livelihoods of local communities.

2. Where Adventure Continues: The Refuge of Lagoa do Peri

While open-sea beaches are busy with fishing nets, the calm waters of Peri Lake (Lagoa do Peri) become our primary sanctuary. As a protected freshwater reserve, it offers the perfect setting for those seeking to maintain their paddling routine in absolute peace.

It’s the ideal place for silence and mental balance. In fact, next month we will release a special article here on the blog detailing everything about Ocean Therapy (or Blue Therapy)—the science behind the well-being that water provides. For now, you can check out our Complete Guide to Lagoa do Peri to plan your next immersion.

3. Why Paddle During the Winter Season?

Many people put their kayaks away when summer ends, but winter in Floripa is technically one of the best times to be on the water:

  • Visibility: The water tends to be clearer, allowing for a crisp view of the bottom.

  • Admiral’s Sky: Sunny winter days offer perfect light for photography.

  • Personal Achievement: Paddling in cooler temperatures brings a refreshing sense of autonomy and triumph.

Conclusion: Honoring the Sea

The Mullet Season teaches us about patience and community. Whether appreciating a "lanço" (net haul) on the beach or exploring permitted routes, we invite you to experience the sea ethically.
